Can students spell?
Date Posted: 13/07/07
University students often get a bad rap in the press – especially when it comes to spelling and grammar! So we decided to run a mass test – just for a bit of fun.
Based on multiple choice selections nearly all students knew the difference between ‘their’, ‘there’ and ‘they’re’ (97%), ‘accept’ and ‘except’ (96%), ‘loose’ and ‘lose’ (97%), ‘application’ and ‘aplication’ (97%).
But here are the shockers. 37% of students thought ‘necessary’ was spelt ‘neccessary’ and over two thirds of students (71%) thought that ‘stationary’ was for writing on, not ‘stationery’ – oh dear, only 29% got it right.
