July 2007

Welcome message

Welcome to our summer newsletter. Another academic year may be drawing to a close, but we'll still be hard at work running student and graduate research projects throughout the holiday period. And with our new Applicant Panel we'll be able to measure Freshers campaigns better than ever before!

New - The Applicant Panel

Here's the problem. Research that evaluates student marketing campaigns normally depends on interviewing respondents before the campaign goes live in order to set a baseline. But how do you reach students before they become students? We've cut through the Gordian Knot and, working with UCAS, we now recruit panellists when they apply to university. With around 20,000 members, The Applicant Panel can meet your quotas and match almost any student marketing campaign.

Opinionpanel just keeps growing

Our panels now stand at over 60,000 applicants, students and graduates. And we still get probably the highest response rates in the industry at around 50% plus; term time or holidays. Why? Because we take quality controls very seriously - at every stage of the research process; when recruiting the panel, managing research in the field, reporting to clients. And it shows through to our clients. Call Becky Lewis on 020 7288 8789 to find out more.

"

Opinionpanel were key in allowing us to measure the impact of our micro marketing activity amongst our target audience of male university students in key cities across the UK. The results not only revealed the great success of the activity but also gave us some clear pointers on how we should look to further refine the campaign moving forwards. The team at Opinionpanel were a pleasure to work with - friendly and very accommodating with a professional, can-do attitude and all of the results were delivered on time.

Bigger than ever - The Graduate Panel

We launched The Graduate Panel at the start of 2007 and it has already proved an unsurpassed source for recruitment research. But this summer it will be growing significantly to around 12,000 recent graduates allowing targeting by degree subject, class, alumni, UCAS points, career interests, bank account, mobile brands etc. Call us on 020 7288 8789 to discuss requirements.

Do students have Higher Expectations?

Students know that the current £3,000 ceiling on tuition fees won't last forever and that eventually some universities may be charging considerably more. We asked over 13,000 new students to envision a future where fees were genuinely variable and asked them a range of questions on how much and how little they'd be prepared to pay in an open market. We then created 'unique target pricing' (UTP), 'optimal price points' (OPP) and 'indifference price points' (IPP) to show our university clients what premiums they might be able to versus the competition. Mean target price points were higher than anyone expected - around £4,800. But the really interesting findings were based on the perceived value added by certain universities and courses - plus demographic factors such as school attended and UCAS points. We expected to see big differences but nothing prepared us for what we actually found.

Special Summer Omnibus pricing

It may be the holidays for students but work goes on for us and our Student and Graduate Omnibus Surveys will continue every fortnight throughout the holidays. Between now and September we'll be holding our pricing (£1,100 for 3 questions then £300 per question*) PLUS giving a free question for any client spending over £3,000. Give Samantha Williams a call to discuss getting on our Omnibus surveys - 020 7288 8789.

And finally... can students spell?

University students often get a bad rap in the press - especially when it comes to spelling and grammar! So we decided to run a mass test - just for a bit of fun. Based on multiple choice selections nearly all students knew the difference between 'their', 'there' and 'they're' (97%), 'accept' and 'except' (96%), 'loose' and 'lose' (97%), 'application' and 'aplication' (97%). But here are the shockers. 35% of students thought 'necessary' was spelt 'neccessary' and over two thirds of students (71%) thought that 'stationary' was for writing on, not 'stationery'; only 29% got it right.
