Researching students and young people
Newsletter - May 2010

Here’s another one of our occasional newsletters reporting on the world of student research. This newsletter covers the student vote, upcoming changes to tuition fees and our wonderful team!

Mass migration of the student vote!

Opinionpanel Research - The student vote after two leader debatesWe've been polling students on their voting intentions since 2004. Our last two waves were at the start of the current election campaign and again after the second Leader Debate. The TV Debates have had a phenomenal impact on students; as many students now support the Lib Dems as the other two main parties combined. Professor Paul Whiteley, co-director of the British Election Survey called it "remarkable". Our data has been covered in The Guardian and Times Higher. Click the chart for our free report.

"How Much More Will Students Pay?"

Opinionpanel Research - How Much More Will Students Pay? image Tuition fees will be a political hot potato for whoever wins the election. Lord Browne is currently reviewing the options. But we have been investigating the issue for three years. What would happen if tuition fees went up substantially? Would students taking Clinical Medicine degrees be prepared to pay substantially more than those doing, say, Psychology degrees? Would students from poorer family backgrounds be less willing to pay? Could research intensive universities charge a premium? And, if so, by how much? Our report; "How Much More Will Students Pay?" - click here for a free summary, is based on an analysis of interviews with 37,000 new first year students. It was completed with Anna Vignoles, Professor of Education Economics at the Institute of Education in London.

Congratulations and welcome back!

Opinionpanel Research - Becky and Eleanor image I'm delighted to announce that both Eleanor Simmons and Becky Lewis are now back from their maternity leave. Becky resumes her role as Research Director and Eleanor resumes as Associate Director, Higher Education. I'm sure many of you know them and will be pleased to welcome them back, as we all are.
